Then somebody will use it and immediately regret it.

Making you save and reload I suppose forces you to be really sure you want to throw all the unneeded stuff away. And it's sufficiently cumbersome that you won't be doing it every 5 minutes.

NASA Using Blender

Ordinarily I would have posted that in the "News And Chat" forum, but since that seems to have disappeared, this is the next best place. NASA have a available a whole bunch of 3D models of their spacecraft and other equipment http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/3d_resources/index.html . And like anything...

I think the usual way to detail an object without adding to its geometry is to stick a texture with a normal map on it.

"Noob To Pro" Wikibook Update

I have been administering a bit of TLC lately to the "Blender 3D: Noob to Pro" wikibook http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Blender_3D:_Noob_to_Pro . GPL makes no distinction whether you redistribute for money or not; if you redistribute, you must offer the source.

By the way, as per recent court cases in both the US and Europe, APIs are not copyrightable.

How about having multiple identically-shaped objects coincident in space, with different alpha transparencies animated over time, so you fade from one into the next?

Perhaps you can do what you want in Blender by giving those door/window objects a movie as a texture.

You mean, you want the shape to be more rounded perpendicular to its thinnest dimension, while still maintaining sharp edges at the top and bottom sides? Normally this would be a piece of cake: apply an edge-split modifier with an edge angle just under 90°, followed by subdivision surface to smooth ...

This would vary depending on the renderer. So which renderer are you talking about?

If your answer is "Blender Internal", then don't expect any of its numbers to make any realistic physical sense at all.
