Actually the problem is more likley that windows XP without LLA is limited to 1.5 GB of ram for data.

I'd pick up Essential Blender, it has a logical order and is well written. (I wrote two of the chapters though so might be a bit biased :) ).

probably a cube is better UV sphere isn't necessarily symmetrical,

turn on x mirror in the sculpting panel.

See the bug tracker, lukep may have found a solution that doesn't involve disabling double buffering - apparently a opengl flag that was implicitly set previously now needs to be explicitly set.

fgons (fake ngons) probably do what you want - select the triangles, press fkey.
