for some reason i can't add objects or maybe i can't see whatever i'm adding objects are added at 3dcursor location, afaik. try to press HOMEkey (see all) or search the (supposed) object in the outliner it could be, also, really small, or really large, or really far if you are "importing" an object...

it's not that it is imposible to do it, but it could and should be more elegant ok, my imagination can relax now :) , i know it's not elegant, but it seemed you were just looking for a bone+ik alternative... so now you have two workarounds (plus, the python way) and you could suggest a "up" feature...

Is it possible to have Blender output the depth from camera to object (to the intersection with the scene of each ray going through each pixel) to a file?
