Might it be the case that those leaves are just uv-mapped planes with alpha? Then the conical appearance comes from the texture and not from the mesh. At least all tree generators I know about work this way. So there isn't anything wrong with the importer.

There isn't a separate face mode anymore. Use face selection in edit mode instead.

You already have got two options:
- Bake it into the texture (as you mentioned). Works well for static but not for moving objects.

Sounds like a driver issue. I think to remember to read some issues like this in here. Search for "ATi", "Radeon" and the like inside the forum. Most certainly you will find an answer to your problem.

You can select the faces for editing UV coordinates directly in edit mode. There isn't any additional face select mode (used to be FKEY) besides the one in edit mode.
