A realtime lighting system for Blender?

Hi. I know that there is talk that during the Blender interface upgrade to seperate the Renderer from the Blender interface to allow for users to choose whatever renderer they want. I was wondering if it would be beneficial to have something similar but for Blender's lighting system.

It's basicly a look as to how Pixar used shader technology to build their real-time lighting system for use on the Cars movie. Typically in most 3D apps you setup your lights and then hit the render button and wait to see what happens. HOwever, it would nice to speedup the work flow by being able to see the effects of your lights as you add them to the scene and as you tweak them.

Now granted Blender was made to run on as many systems as possible and a lot of people don't have the ability to use shaders. So maybe this system could be a plugin or option to turn on after Blender has verified you have the capability to do it. Also another thing to consider is that in the video they could have been running it on a blazing fast computer. Anyway in the end I don't know if this would be possible but I thought I would throw it out there and see what those developing Blender have to say.
