Forums reorganization

Post by ton » Fri Jun 13, 2003 2:49 pm

Several people noticed there are too many forums here at the site... it scatters discussion a lot, and makes it a lot of work to read all as well. Not even mentioning the idea to add new ones (like blender3 or so).

Here is a proposal for joining the existing forums here to a limited set:

News & chat
General discussion and news on Blender development
Documentation & education
Writing documentation, tutorials and general education topics
Blender functionality
The interface, 3d tools, (character) animation, rendering, import/export, etc.
Python
Scripting in Blender with Python. Developing the API and using it.
Interactive 3d
Game Engine, Players & Web Plug-in, Virtual Reality, support for other engines
Coding Blender
Compiling, Libraries, Modules, Coding Guidelines and Porting
Foundation and blender.org feedback
Feedback to the Blender Foundation and moderators of this website

Of course no threads will be lost, old forums will be nicely merged.

I think I would like to see animation (which would include
character animation) and rendering separated from the
Blender Functionality forum. The rest looks OK.

Blender functionality board should include all that
is about blender's functionality and that includes feature
requests, thus including animation, character animation and
rendering.. But if its more of something
having to do with semantics, like "this is not the discussion
group where you talk about animations"
then I would remove it from the title.. There should be some clarrification
that functionality board is discussing the future of blender
and an exchange of ideas, not about using features that
exist in blender, although this may come about if
someone makes a feature request that looks like something
that already exists in blender..

Unless of course I'm misinterpreting what "belnder functionality"
is about.. Is it about dealing if user's problems?

Probably a misleading title. The proposed forum is not about the 'functionality board', but about stuff in blender (condensing the rendering, animation, tools forums that we currently have). Maybe a title like Blender Features or something would be better.

Hos: Do you think that animation would get enough traffic to warrant it's own forum? I wonder if it's possible to have forums within forums...

I don't think it would get huge traffic, but I find the
content that is currently in there is of good quality.
and I am able to use the posts as reference material.
It would be a shame to have those posts buried
under a lot of posts about completely unrelated topics.

That last revision (the second version) looks like a winner to me.

the Documentation & education
part never is well put together. It tends to become a mess of rambling

May if it could all be put into a html doc area, like the cvs system .
That way anybody could contribute but have it well subclased from
the start. and so it would not get congested with pointless comments.

all else looks good.

Yep, second version looks like a great improvement.

I don't think Documentation & Education will be a problem - the two topics are very similar anyway/

I like the second listing, it makes sense..

I think the docs/education area could be
split up into docs/tutorials, and education
might remain as a forum.. The docs/tutorials
might be arranged like this:

docs :
chapter 1 : navigation
- tutorial links pertaining to navigation
chapter 2: meshes
- tutorial links pertaining to meshes
...

A minimal work version would be just to
cover the basics of each part of blender and
allow the users to add comments, including links
to tutorials.. That way whatever is not covered
the users will append at the end of the chapter.

Ummm ... you do realize we are talking about the
structure of the forums, and not writing a book, right?

I think that, that is a good idea. There are some forums that dont get posts for a couple of days and are quite empty. People seem to be using News & Chat for a lot of topics that should be in other forums, such as one i just noticed about Linux Makefiles for verse, surly that should be in compiling and coding or in tools. Topics like that are clogging up this News and Chat forum.
