Question on IRC and Freenet

Post by j kaulfers » Tue Feb 19, 2013 2:36 am

Can some one please post specific instructions on how to get into the IRC for Blender on Freenet. I would love to be far more involved but the only thing I have ever seen is that live chat for blender is IRC on freenet.

We have a Chat menue or tab right next to Forums but no instructions on how to get it working.

See the bit on the Chat tab titled Accessing IRC.

First, you need a way to connect to the IRC server. This is usually a client program like XChat or mIRC, but it can also be done via a web browser. See the Web Chat link on freenode.net .

Basically, you use your client (or browser) to connect to freenode.net . Once connected, you join the channel of your choice, for example #blendercoders. Note the channel names start with the # sign.

If you plan on using IRC much, you probably want to register a nickname or handle. This gives you a consistent identity on IRC. Some channels require you to be a registered user.

The freenode FAQ at
http://freenode.net/faq.shtml
has some useful info on registering and using the network.
