That is nice, but considering the fact that most Blender users' computers only support OpenGL 1.1, this is useless (at least for now, or until we all get those OpenGL 2.0 compatible ATI cards

Most of the current high end cards, maybe. But not everyone has GeforceFX 5XXX or ATI 9XXX.

Friday13: Why do you think so? It's not like every card support every feature of the old 1.1 specification now...

Well, more vid cards suppot OpenGL 1.1 rather than the extremely-new OpenGL 2.0. I believe Blender is based on 1.1 or 1.2. Making Blender 2.0 at this time would either a)for users to stop using Blender and/or search for an app that is supported by their video cards, b) force users to buy another video card (what if they have no money?) or c)er.......it's enough with a and b.
I'm not saying that OpenGL 2.0 should never be used for Blender. I'm just saying it's a really bad idea to do it NOW.

How easy do you think it is to make Blender a stable OGL2 app and how long time do you think it would take?... Do you really think it would be ready by tomorrow if we start now?
As I see it, OGL2 should be a Blender3 aim.

Well, if you can code fast enough....

It better be (and if it is, I hope Blender 3 is years away [by then, everyone should have OpenGL 2.0 compatible cards])

as far as I understood @de waag last year its probable that blender3 will be opengl2... sorry if I misunderstood... I'd be sorry.
btw. I refer to the last session about blender-dev.
