Another 3d model editor

Post by tgraupmann »

[Paraphrase]
I am currently working on a 3ds model animator (see attached movie). Note that the model is not mine, I bought it with Dark Basic. This is intended to be a modeling program you can use with your friends. Currently the only format supported is 3DS, but I plan to include others. Any suggestions what features I should include?

verse is aimed at the same aproch as what tagCMA is, letting multiple people working on the same scene at the same time.

http://www.blender.org/modules/verse/

it should be intergrated into blender soon

Except TagCMA is written in C#. The verse is written in C. They both have a lot in common. Except, the architecture is different.

Cool project.

Have you considered using Axiom as the underlying 3d engine?

It's a powerfull OO realtime rendering lib based on Ogre written in c#.

I'm currently creating a game / editor myself that will have a few similar concepts as your project, with the editor being the game, the game being the editor.

It would be cool if i could use my app as a client to tagcma at some point.

Names are funny. Axiom is also a well known XML feed provider that plagues this world with Internet ads.

I used OpenGL in C#, but at some point I'd prefer to use anything to get better performance.

If your project is already written in C#, you would have an easy time integrating with the C# web services. You don't have to worry about the database. Here is the web service layer that is constantly evolving.

Have you created a web reference before? Just aim it at that sucker and you'll be able to call the methods through SOAP.

I wrote a couple tutorials about (1) creating Web Services http://www.tagenigma.com/geeklog/articl ... 0806273643 and (2) Web References http://www.tagenigma.com/geeklog/articl ... 0174016825 so these are the steps you'll need to take.

Just by connecting to the Web Reference, it will generate all the network OO objects you'll need.

What does your client look like?

I'm not the main developer of Axiom, but been using it for a year.

i'm mainly concentrated on other aspects of my project now, mainly a portal based scenegraph, editor related things are next, and an application like this is one possible use i had in mind, for collaborative architecture visualisation. kinda funny that i just find this.

have a look at the thread where i log my progress:

http://www.axiom3d.org/Default.aspx?tab ... sts&t=1634

or drop in irc channel #axiom at irc.freenode.net, since you seem to be online at the moment. i'm in there all the time.

have a look at Axiom, it's really stable, great framework design and abstracts buffers and such, so you can target both opengl and managed directx.

you'd just have to create a higher level datatype for your objects, which you seem to have already done.

I have a meeting for the next 1.5H to go over the design of Internet Yellow Pages like Amazon's A9 http://a9.com/optical?a=oyp. I'll be able to chat after that. I'll be on ICQ at 270210389.
