Turntable view rotation

This request has been beaten to death in the forums. I've downloaded the latest CVS source and have a working build environment. Unless there is a huge objection, I'd like to implement the turntable view rotation where there is no roll to the camera.

It would seem that most users use Trackball view rotations, and those who select turntable don't really see a differene between that and Trackball. I would recommend that turntable become what people generally think of as turntable rotation where the view orbits around a point with no camera roll.

Seconded.

And it would be great to have this option on by default, for new installations.

(In fact, I hate the current view orbit so much, I have MMB drag set as Pan instead of Rotate)

If you did this, I would love you forever and have all of your babies. Or, if that's too personal, I would just say thank you and maybe finally give Blender another try.

The patch has been posted. It's in the thuopuu source now.

I think my wife and 3 children would take issue of your proposal. That's quite an offer for only 20 lines of code.

Ah! Good, I probably would have regretted the whole babies thing eventually anyway. So instead, thank you. :)

Has it been added to bf-blender ? It doesn't seem to have been added in the last build.

its not in Gabio's most recent build (i have no idea about the CVS source), but i think that it would be a good idea to do so...

It's in Tuhopuu3 and is in the processing of getting into the bf-blender release. There were some loose ends that needs to be taken care of. It's been posted, so hopefully it will be out soon. Try the Thuopuu release whenever it's posted.

I used to like turntable views, those were the days..

Now I can't stand it.. I guess trackball makes people sick to their
stomach, but over time you will find that turntable tends to make object
upright, and symmetrical.. I mean in reality you don't design things on a
turntable, why do it in 3D package?? But if you get disoriented and
can't work in 6 degrees of freedom, there is a switch in the top of the screen that will toggle it off.. Only probleem is its not consistent..

If you are looking for turntable animation, just parent a camera to a empty, rotate the empty..

Well there is the pottery wheel, though granted, that is a slightly different technique ;) The main concept is keeping the Z axis upright. My desk doesn't tilt side to side when I use it, and I like to have that same predictability in 3D.

Well, guess what the aforementioned patch does.
