OS X.4.4
:D
Hi. I downloaded Blender to try it out, but on my 600 Mhz iBook with 640 MB RAM and OS X.4.4 it won't even launch.
I did a google search and apparently I'm not the only one with this problem.
Is anybody working on a fix?

Yes I have got the same problems:
It crashes immediately on launch.
The crash log said it could not
load Python 2.4.
Of course it cannot because Mac OS X 10.4.4
the most recent Update now on my computer,
still runs Python version 2.3.5.
I think maybe Apple is going to release a
new security update or new OS version.
But still this is a big problem.
Python actually is online at version 2.4.2 already.
But Apple still is on version 2.3.5.
So what do we do now ? I tried to compile
Python 2.4.2 myself but I couldn't manage it:

So please Blender team, could you help ?
Thank you so much !!

Python 2.3
There's a Python 2.3 version for Mac OS X available from the download page.
Have fun,
B@rt
As the link for the Python 2.4 version didn't work, I actually downloaded the Python 2.3 version in the first place.
And it won't launch under X.4.4.

Same Problem
2.41 (either the Python 2.3 or 2.4 build) will not launch on my G4 iBook running 10.4.4 (just patched this morning). 2.40 and 2.37a both worked flawlessly.
AFAIK the Python version is irrelevant as Python is compiled into Blender (Blender 2.40 works fine on my PC which has no Python of its own installed).
I doubt video RAM has anything to do with it. This would cause poor performance or garbled graphics, not failure to *launch*.
Incidentally, even the first "white" iBooks have Radeon video adapters, which should be just fine for Blender. Older "clamshell" iBooks most likely have Rage video adapters which should allow Blender to run but will offer "poor interactivity" according to the Graphics Card compatibility data on the Blender site.

look in console.app for error message. there is likely one explaining exactly the problem. if 2.40 worked, there is no reason 2;41 should not as init code did not change. game engine may fail but it is a separate problem.

Try setting the BF_TIFF_LIB environment variable if you want this support.
Example: setenv BF_TIFF_LIB /usr/lib/libtiff.so
Saved session recovery to /tmp/quit.blend
Blender quit
P.S. looks like it uses local Python installation. However, I don't think this stops Blender from working -- under Windows it just complains that it didn't find it.
But here's the kicker, I tried to recreate it, and this time 2.41 launched:

I just tried launching Blender with the setting 640 x 480 and 256 colors and it still won't launch.

Well I have news. You can decide for your self whether it is good or bad. Here is what I had to do to get 2.41 for Python 2.4 to work:
First I tried installing Python 2.4 using Darwinports. However it kept putting it in /System/Library/Frameworks while Blender looks in the more appropriate /Library/Frameworks. So I downloaded the source tarball. Extracted it, configured with --enable-framework=/Library/Frameworks, and built it. That did it.
For those squeemish about compiling it your self this is what you do:
Download it to your desktop (the .bz2 or bzipped version)
Open a terminal (this can be found in Applications->Utilities)
type: cd /Users/<username>/Desktop (replacing <username> with your username)
type: tar xjvf Python-2.4.2.tar.bz2
type: cd Python-2.4.2
type: ./configure --enable-framework=/Library/Frameworks
when that finishes type: make
when that finishes type: make frameworkinstall
You should be good to go. You can clean up your desktop now if you wish.

a pre-built python 2.4 that install in right place can be found here :
http://undefined.org/python/
there is a proeminent link from python.org site.
Note : At this moment there is no downside to using the system python2.3 but 2.4 is a bit faster and some mem bugs were corrected.
So to summarize :
- if you did not install python2.4 use the py2.3 build.
- if you want py2.4 use the one from undefined.org
