General discussion about the development of the open source Blender

I am attempting to recover accidentally deleted files from my hard disk (ext3 so there is no easy "undelete" available). I am looking for information on the header of a blender file. The most I have been able to find is it starts "BLENDER". Does it then have, at a fixed location, a value giving the length of the file? If so I could find the header and calculate the location of the end from there - although any files that have got split up on the disk would be unreadable. So far I have been able to recover >5000 emails!
