Blender 2.65: is CYCLES slower than it was in 2.63 ?

Post by moplen » Thu Dec 13, 2012 11:06 am

I made some test renderings to compare cycles's speed in different blender versions and it seems to me that cycles in blender 2.63 was much faster than it is now in 2.65.
My system: AMD Phenom II six-core 3.2ghz, 8GB ram, NVidia GeForce GTX 560.

I began with a 1200x600 scene with the following settings:

-blender 2.63:
integrator: full global illumination - samples: 200
tile size: 1024 - min.size 64
GPU rendering time: 2' 40''

-blender 2.65:
sampling: progressive - samples: 200
light path: full global illumination
tile size: X=1200 Y=600 ( 1 single tile)
GPU rendering time: 4' 44''

all other parameters were exactly the same.
Rendering time with CPU were almost 10 times longer, but the difference between 2.63 and 2.65 didn't seem to change much.

I tried changing tile size in 2.65 but performance was almost the same:

tile size: X=600 Y=300 ( 4 tiles) rendering time: 4' 18''
tile size: X=300 Y=150 ( 16 tiles) rendering time: 4' 18''
tile size: X=120 Y= 60 (100 tiles) rendering time: 5' 11''

Maybe the meaning of the parameters is not the same in different blender version and the settings i used are not comparable, but i noticed no differencies in final images.

Did anybody do the same test?

I guess I'm doing some mistakes or settings are not good, so all advices are welcome!

Yeah, its definitely slower and now it is eating up my CPU at the same time. Is it possible to roll back to 2.64? Renders that used to take 3 to 4 mins are now taking 11 minutes.

Found I still had the 2.64 install and rolled Blender back. 2.65 has been a total nightmare.

Cycles is ok !!

The problem (for me) was just because the 2.65 installer did NOT keep the GPU config (in the user preferences).

So the properties panel shows you are running GPU, but in fact this is wrong until you put the good parameters in the user preferences (system tab).

Performances are good now (maybe a bit better, depending on the tiles dimensions you set) and no more CPU consumming !!

The first thing I did was check User Prefs and set it backt o GPU but it was still taking over 10 minutes and was eating up my CPU. I rolled back to 2.64 and it's now on the 3 min average again. So until 2.65 has this Cycles issue fixed I'll be staying at 2.64
