Blender's renderer and external renderer export

I am currently using Blender 2.66 and reading 'Blender Noob to Pro' E-book. And I have to edit a texture through Gimp, (it's a picture of the colored part of the eye and the pupil) and then apply it to my mesh, but when I save my picture in Gimp I can't find it when I'm trying to open it through Blender, but I can see it when I go to my documents. Any suggestions?

This is an old enough post that I expect the OP (original poster) has solved this issue by now. For the benefit of future readers, I suspect the problem the OP had was saving the image file from GIMP in the wrong image format. Images need to be single layer, and uncompressed.
