I have made a first release of the CrystalBlend binary (for windows only). This is really a very preliminary version. It maybe supports only 20% of what the Game Engine can do so it is not usable at all as a replacement of the Game Engine unless you have very simple needs. Also this is only the stand-alone version and it still uses the old sensor/actuator logic system. The binary can read in principle every .blend file. One demo .blend file is included. Check out the readme.txt that comes with it. Note that you need pretty good 3D hardware to see the 'goodhardware' version
Let me know if you have any problems or issues with this.
This link is bad and should point to the CrystalBlend Lite page, where you can dl the latest version, although I don't know if jorrit will be working on any more releases of the standalone binary...
Controls ARE wierd, but the demo is really good in terms of progress.
Try opening up the normalmap.blend in Blender's game engine -- you'll see much worse results. So, in that case, things are looking good so far!
