Mesh Generation in Animation

Hey really important question...is there a way to generate a mesh in a key frame and then have it do its animation, and then destroy it after another key frame?
The scenario is, is I am trying to make a space battle scene and I want to use mesh objects with halo texturing to animate laser fire, the only reason i am using that instead of the other solution that I have only been able to come up with which is using particles, is that it is easier to control the animation with mesh objects. If you have a better solution that would be appreciated as well.

Any ideas will help.
