combined Shape & Skeletal animation..

Does blender support Shape animation, and the ability to combine it with skeletal;

e.g. can you give it several predefined extreme poses of a character mesh, skin it to a simple skeleton, then get it to pick a mix of shapes based on each skeletal animation frames' proximity to the predefined shapes; if so what does the workflow for that look like

.. or is this sort of thing usually always done with driven bones..
