when i press alt+A, my animation only bakes to 250 frames. i extended the frame amount past that, but it stopped baking at 250 frames. so. how do i get my animation to bake past 250 frames?

Down below in the timeline window of the the default view, there is a tab with start:0 and End:250.This indicates the starting and ending of th animation in terms of frames. You can modify these values to change the animation length.

Donno why your blender is misbehaving.!!!

If you set the end value to 500 then it should play up to 500 frame unless you have animation like path follow which by default expire within 100 frames or particle animations which by default end within 250 frames. You need to change the properties of these cases to achieve prolonged animations.

Just in case,if this tip doesn't work, can you please describe the scene you are working on so that I can understand whats going on.
