Breaking character into parts and keep animations?

I have a rigged, skinned and animated character. Now I want to separate its head into a new object, so I will have two pieces: head & body. I will make new heads and exchange them... so what I'm doing is a character customizer in Unity. Is there an easy way to achieve this in Blender?? If I make it, I will share the customization system with the community :)
