Somebody mentioned on the durian blog that there was a lot of oneupmanship on the presenting side, with the t-shirts and so on, and whilst I agree, as this is not how I would do it for work, I can understand it, in that the way a competition works it does leave a gap in the normal way a designer communicates with a client. I thought about the situation briefly and felt a bit stupid after, normally when doing logo options for someone I would talk them through it! This is the first time I've had a chance to sit down and look at it in a while, I've tweaked the logo to a point where I am completely happy with it, after designing it in blender there where quite a few things that needed tweaking in inkscape.
I'll bring you through a few of the main elements behind the logo.
The S in this logo symbolizes a dragon, with its jagged spine plates. It is subtle, and the reason behind that is I want the logo to say, the likes of dragons belong in this short, not that this short is necessarily about dragons (Partly because I don't know the story, partly because from what I've heard the story will have some symbolism or depth of some kind). The Flame dotting the I reenforces this. And also gives the logo itself a symbol to reduce it from being solely a typographic logo. (It is placed and touches roughly twice the x height of the letters - just saying that for all the design nerds). Another choice I made was to mimic the town we have seen a few times from david and a few test renders, It reminded me of overlaying canopies and with dragons lending themselves to an asian persuasion I used the T and E to form a relationship of overlaying canopies and the oriental style ascending gutters. Lastly the degraded look of the logo lends itself both to a dragons texture and to that of ink on an old scroll. In other words how I think the logo would look done in the sintel world. I find that to be an interesting thing to aim for because it ensures the logo's relation with the content.
Ok thats me done, good luck to everyone! Really enjoying seeing all the different perspectives on this!
