How to add points to edges ? instead of doing ctrl + r then deleting the edge to get the points.

wow, I didn't knew that the technique you described actually works.
I tried it and seemed to get an n-gon. Even in wireframe mode it looked still like an n-gon. I thought this was not possible in Blender :?:
But it was such a weird building that I couldn't add a face to it.

hi if i get it well...

1: select the edge
2: press Wkey (specials)
3: press subdivide (you get one more vertex) or
press subdivide multi (and then chooxse how many times)

Same question. Is it possible to add multiple vertices to an edge without Blender adding connecting edges?

not until 2.50 is released, see the article on Bmesh in 2.5 in Blender Nation

I figured out that if you aren't yet dealing with faces then you can subdivide edges without Blender connecting other vertices.
