Game avatar actions with switchable props?

I'm working on a 3d video game for a senior design project. We've decided to use blender to make the models and import them into XNA. I have a question that I'm hoping some of you can me with.

I'm planning on makeing all of our models human-shaped so I can make one skeleton with all the animations and just stick it onto all the characters when I'm done. However, we want a collection of different weapons we'd like to be able to switch in and out for different commends (shooting, throwing, melee attacking, etc).

How can I go about having a "prop" bone that I can later map any object I want to on?

Let me know if this isn't clear or if there is a better way to go about this, but right now this seems to make the most sense we just need to fgiure out how to do it!
