HOW DO YOU APPEND MATERIALS IN BLENDER 2.5!?!?

I need to know how to append a Material in Blender 2.5. I go file>append>then to my folder which is saved as library>Materials>Tire rubber>Link/Append From Library. And I have the object selected but nothing happens! I've tried to go to file>link and then followed the same instructions, but I still don't understand how to get the material actually on the object.

that will only append/link the material. You then have to chose that material from dropdown list in material tab.

I'm in the materials tab, but I don't know what button to press to get that option. You don't mean texture drop down list like clouds, wood, noise,ect... do you?
