UV texture map generated at odd angles

I am a new blender user and I keep having a recurring problem. I will start exturing an object an occassionally it will skew the texture map when I hit U and Unwrap. The only solution I have found is to complete start over again creatingthe object, which is fine while I was testing with cubes but now I am doing complex parts. Needless to say I must find a solution. I have attached a graphic to show the problem. The left pane will yield a square to fill the map in the right pane but instead the map is rotated CCW.

Any assistance is appreciated.

There is no image because I can't figure out how to put one in. Instructions on that would be helpful also.[/url]
