I'm guessing you need to install the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package (x86)

blender worked fine on Vista premium. Where did you get your version of blender ?
You should get the file here, as some other sites build blender and might have issues with vista.

You probably want to uninstall first then install again.
If that still does not work, maybe you need to make sure you have latest updates for Vista.
Another thing is maybe check that .net 3.0 is installed. it might install some missing stuff you might need also. I think vista has 3.0 but not sure, or maybe the update process will do that for you.

Hi again
As I pointed here http://www.blender.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12141 this particular DLL (MSVCR71.DLL) is not installed neether with WinXP+SP2 neether with VC2005 redistributables. My point is that it is not present in clean OS install. So either Blender install must check for it's presence and install it or there sould be some other way pointed on the Download page how to obtain it.

A lot of older programs (even a few years old) won't work on Vista. Either they have minor compatibility issues or the program will no longer work anymore on Vista. I was forced to uninstall Microsoft Student and NERO 6 and many other programs I use (and buy a new copies0johannes0 wrote:My problem with blender in windows vista home premium is that when I have installed blender and I want to start blender, it says it can't be start because MSVCR71 isn't found and it says also that 'blender.exe' doesn't work anymore.

Since Blender is open source, it should be no problem to fix these issues. But this shows how Microsoft uses the open source method of bug fixing...depending on the customers to find the problems.
Sorry...got off subject.
I also found out not too long ago that Vista's "My Programs" folder where a lot of the programs are installed are READ ONLY. This means that if you use the windows install on Vista, likely, you'll encounter some problems. A quick solution is to make it so that the configuration files/scripts/plug-ins are read/written into the "My Documents" folder (this is where a lot of the games that are recently coming out are saving at; like: Halo, Prey, Doom 3, etc.).
