I think it's just prejudice
Or just my ignorance. disclaimer: long time since I was involved in Win development. My understanding that some of the free MS compiler versions do not do 64 bits. That and the inability to build certain libs were the show stoppers.

And yeah, the VS debugger is (or was) great.

These times are over. Everything included in express ;)
I think M$ has finally realized that Open Source development is good for Windows too.
