i just downloaded the sources of blender. for fun ( i understand probably less then 1% of the code) i was looking through them, until is found this in drawview.c

if it is what it seems to be, how can it be used? just curious.

From what I can tell, at one point there was an effort to integrate physics into Blender, for animation purposes (the gameengine is almost 100% seperate). So, for example you could have things bouncing around in your animation. It never quite happened, though, and since then the physics code has been abstracted to allow multiply physics engines.
