Linux Static/Dynamic

Post by bannerboy »

I'm a linux user and I always build blender from sourcecode, and I'm wondering what the difference is between static and dynamic builds. what are the pros/cons

the static build doesn't depend on [as many] external libraries
[it has static links [contains] several libraries, rather than using those on your computer]

notably opengl

the static build comes with opengl, and will not use any hardware acceleration because of that. Also, it is a larger binary.

on systems where you have opengl acceleration [or a working instal of mesa] you should use the dynamic build, it is a smaller download and it will probably run faster.

the static build is kind of a last resort for when the dynamic one doesn't work. Do we need it any more?
