Error 128?

Hi. Trying to comple blender cvs with the free Visual C++ Toolkit 2003 and SCons. Unfortunately SCons is generating a failure with the message:

scons: *** [C:\blenderdev\build\win32\lib\blender_render.lib] Error 128
scons: building terminated because of errors.

blender_render.lib is actually not present. The only file in C:\blenderdev\build\win32\lib is blender_blendersrc.lib. Would anyone possibly know what the cause the error might be and how to fix? Thanks.

The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.
You have something running that is getting in the way.

Remember: the important error is NOT the last one, but the first one.

Ok, yes. Thanks. I willl remember that.

I have a feeling. The error sounds a little like a dummy error that turns up when a file is missing. Since blender_render.lib isn't being generated and is missing would that possibly cause the script to terminate with error 128?

I can't now even duplicate the above code. Cleaning house with 'scons clean' and building again is generating different readout but the final error 128 is still showing. Maybe the build directory should be deleted too. The code posted above is generating the error about the process in use after the 'fo.c / Foc etc.' is executed, is that correct? So the file that's in use is fo.c?

Another thing that I tried is turning off all the optional bits, OpenEXR, Fluidsim, GameEngine, etc. Still with the same fatal ending. :) I really can't think of any running apps that would be sharing a file that the development environment would need except for blender itself, but that sounds wrong too. hmm.

IIRC, Windows occasionally incorrectly reports files as being locked. Have you tried rebooting?

Maybe your virus scanner is locking the temporary files as they they're being created (by compiler/linker) and scanned (by a real-time scanner)?

Ok, so, turned off the the virus checker, the spyware checker, the firewall et all. :) Cleared out the temp directories, ran SCons from the Visual C Toolkit prompt and the same error shows after all is said and done. Still no go. I too noticed the temporary folder and, although I didn't acutally reboot, deleting a couple of files from there did in fact, at one point, clear up some errors. Having to reboot every time a binary is compiled though is going to be very impractical. Cygwin is working just fine and it would likely be easier to migrate to Linux.

A big problem is the dos window has a very small memory buffer, something like 256 lines or so, and the readout goes by so fast it's impossible to follow as the build develops. Someone mentioned the Viual C++ 2005 Express edition has a graphical environment. Would that package be able to compile blender? Anyone tried yet?

Ideally, of course, the easiest solution would be optimized versions made available directly from the foundation. Well, for the artists. :)

Here's another buffer capture. Clearly the blender_render.lib isn't getting built. I couldn't really say why though.

dynamic_buildinfo.obj calls buildinfo.c [These files are present.

You don't have to reboot every time you compile, just when the OS hoses up the file locking.

My advice is to run the build 13 more times and if you get the same error each time, do try rebooting. Or you could just reboot and see if the problem goes away.

As for reading the error messages, redirect the output to a file:
scons >error.log 2>&1

Actually the computer was turned off over night and rebooted this morning and scons still coughed up the same error.

Also, the error log looks identical to the buffer capture so no real news there either.
