Here is a simple suggestion that will save a lot of gray hairs for those of us who like to create assets for Game engines and whatnot:

Use Wings 3D's method of smoothing, where smooth/hard is applied to EDGES where in blender it is currently applied to FACES. Having smoothing applied to faces is very clumsy, because edges is where the smoothing takes place anyways and is thus allows for much more flexible smoothing groups.

Also, it would make exporting/importing actually work with smoothing. Currently the way Blender handles smoothing is so different from other software that smoothing almost never exports or imports properly.

This feature request post is gravely outdated (last edited in 2005) and should either be updated or unstickied...

Here is a reply I recently received about feature requests.

-----------------

Yeah the feature requests tracker was taken down about the same time that searching was disabled. Were in the process of upgrading the projects site. That will hopefully bring back search and then it might make sense to add feature requests back in. [snip]

I'd suggest doing a post similar to this one on the developer forums if your
really serious about your idea and think its worth it:
http://www.blender.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=16995

Another idea is to post something here:
http://www.blenderstorm.org/

(It's down right now but is an interesting site [snip])

If you really want people to take you seriously, make sure you know what
your talking about in blender, and provide as much information as you can. You'll have a lot better chance of getting noticed if you can show
you've done your homework, and have a well though out proposal with clear direction.

Just look at some of the other feature requests on the board to see
examples of what works and what doesn't.

Thanks,

Kent Mein

Let's not flood the developer forums with feature suggestion discussions.

One can find the developer forums behind the 'getting involved' links on the website.
