should I start a new thread for this? I don't want to hijack the original... On the other hand I really don't want to be making a big deal of these experiments right now in case of false impressions/expectations.

NO DON"T START A NEW THEARD JUST YET! this forum was asking to be hijacked by you, bring it on man...
I agree completely...in my experience the best interfaces are the ones you dont notice. A more grayscaled version of the current one is exactly what I have been trying to get at in my mock-ups. Having said that, Broken has hit the nail on the head. I absolutley love his interface proposal and I am not just saying that it looks cool. I would do anything to see it get implemented. If I could have my tab idea for the buttons window ( http://www.blender.org/modules.php?op=m ... pic&t=1626) with your interface...I would be a very happy man. Damn...I just cant stop looking at it. You know what would be really sweet...is if we could throw suberduber's idea in the mix somehow too. It really would be nice to have some meaning to the color of the buttons...but ultimately, the dark greys are brilliant! Man I am supposed to be getting my tutorial done and now I want to go and create new mockups!!!! Ahhhh!!
Wow, what a response! Unfortunately I haven't been able to do much on this recently since for the last few weeks (worst part was last week) I've been really sick with pneumonia . Luckily I seem to be slowly making an improvement now.
Anyway, I've made the slider a bit nicer:
And here's a Windows binary for anyone who wants to see what it's currently like in practise. From my own testing, I personally find the subtler look of the menus easier to work with. You may also notice the top menu bar is a bit different. I've been playing and experimenting with that a bit too - might post another thread about it.
I thik I'll join this thread too
I don't thik that present blender interface is ugly. But as somone said, its evolution. You are doing good job broken, keep it up
