Use of the "UV/Image Editor" crashes Blender

I want to texture a floor, so I unwrap the geometry and then I open my floor texture in the "UV/Image Editor".
But if I zoom out a few steps, so that I am able to see the whole texture, Blender crashes. (In german the windows error message is: "blender.exe hat ein Problem festgestellt und muss beendet werden").
Also the blender debug output has no information on the crash.
The texture is pretty big (6000x6000px) but that can't be the problem, or can it?
And is it a Blender problem or a problem with my PC?

I hope that someone can help me :)

PS: It makes no difference if I use the texture with the high quality (32,5 MB) or if I use the heavy compressed version (1,37 MB)

Crashes when doing big things are often related to running out of memory. If so, there should be a message to that effect in the console. Something about calloc or malloc returns nil.

6000 x 6000 is a very large texture, try reducing it. Also using textures that are 'power of 2' eg: 512, 1024, 2048 etc may give you better performance.
