viewing multiple poses of a skin simultaneously?

Is it possible to set blender up to display different poses of an skin alongside the base-pose

e.g. modify mesh & vertices in the base pose and see what they look like in multiply postures.
particularly for weight-map painting but also for general meshing etc..

EDIT: so i found you can indeed instance skin & armature but you can only view both either deformed in pose mode or undeformed in edit mode
