last version of blender i used on such machine (under linux and windows) was, umm .. a late 1.x release. with no "special" graphic accelerator - a MACH 64 or something. anyway, i found the interface pretty normal, no lag or something. i don't know how much has changed since those releases, but i have to admit, drawing fancy rectangles on a screen can be accomplished by a C64 in realtime. i have no clue what causes the slowdown in this specific case - maybe drivers? wrong bios settings? (my ATH 550 performed like a P90 until i made a bios update, enabling "super bypass mode" or something alike).. you're sure it's a P133 and not a mac? ..just kidding

the problem seems to be XP with ogl fonts... [all my other opengl apps run fine though]
with AA fonts on it's worse, but even normal fonts are hella slow.

hey, everyone, thanks for replying! I've downloaded version 2.28 now and will test it tomorrow. I really hope that version improves interface speed, and will come back and comment. Allthough I fear that the whole gui is built on a very complex highlevel toolkit...

Anyway, I hope that the interface discussion will continue, so that Blender can become a raw highperformance 3D application, and not just another "totally customizable / downloadable skins" type of thing.

Take a look at "the making of Toy Story" for a glimpse of Marionette, Pixars in-house animation package!

It's all about good configuration of the computer.

I'm running Blender on Celeron 500 MHz, 192 MB RAM, with Win2k (this OS is real CPU killer), I have Riva TNT2 M64 with 32MB running on AGP 2x (due to stupid mainboard). And all blender versions from 2.23 to 2.28 were realy fast (miraculously fast).

I had the same problem with XP, Updated the video card driver and got it to work perfectly.

Some cards are better than others, I dumped my SIS and got a GeForce. Much better. By far

There can be no other problem, it's got to be an OGL issue.

Its the menus, popus and panels that aren't fast. I can have several hundred thousand polygons moving around and animated and not have any slowdown whatsoever... 1.7ghz 1gig ram, ati radeon 9700, winXP. The 3D aspects of blender work great but the 2D menus though are slow on my work machines and on another system here at home. The menus on my fast machine here at home are quick enough but still lag many times for no reason. The interface issues should definitely get worked out... its not a driver thing. Running lightwave on the same systems does not yield such slow down in menu navigation.

Most likely this is something that wont really get resolved or looked at till version 3.. but its worth taking note.

I'm now running the 1.80a version, and getting ~reasonable performance even on my 133MHz system. This is happy news for me, since I can now start learning Blender instead of swearing at its interface...

However, the menus are slow in the old versions too. The artifacts have multiplied in newer versions, and seems to be getting worse with every version! As Pablosbrain points out: the problem only affects 2D menus, popups and panels, caused by poor interface drawing routines.

Does anyone know who's maintaining the interface code? I may be able to rewrite parts of the code to speed up menu drawing, but have no experience with such large projects like Blender, and have never used CVS "whatever that is" =)...

The problem is so annoying and the solution so simple that there's just got to be a way to implement it before late!

Blender only uses OpenGL for drawing. No system or OS dependency whatsoever. So it's also used for drawing the entire GUI, including pull down menus.

What h/w accellerated OpenGL drivers sometimes badly implement is frontbuffer drawing, quite useful and necessary for menus...

For 2.28 I could solve quite some problems in our GUI system related to slowness, especially for some NVidia cards and OSX. I'm quite confident Blender runs smooth now with all 3d cards that offer full OpenGL support.

For improvements, especially with less common 3d cards, we can only solve it with an active developer who participates in our coding projects. I'm more than willing to assist & help with that.

We're also working on updating the Graphics Card FAQ on www.blender3d.org. Many problems can really be solved with upgrading drivers, and setting the right properties for it.

i installed the very latest gfx card drivers and it worked again :D
the problem is that some drivers dont work properly with winXP.
now i've got a different issue, some icons on the buttons seem to be strangely narrow :?

This is 3D, OpenGL to be exact. It will NOT be fast unless you have a rather good graphics card AND (very importatnt) hardware accelerated OpenGL drivers for your graphics card.
There are also some blender versions around that statically linked OpenGL, this you will only use software rendereing(SLOW), be sure to not use those.
(if it means anything, I run Blender on a 433MHz Celeron, geforce4 gfx card, nvidia opengl drivers, RedHat Linux. The interface is lightening fast. Much faster than "ordinary" applications. (It's fast even with a geforce 2 card)
