Problem with collada and object name limits

Hi - I'm using Blender to bulid data for my game. I'm using Collada as an intermediate format which my custom data tool reads in and created game assets.

The problem I'm having is in tagging metadata to objects. The Collada exporter doesn't export custom properties, so I have been using a naming convention on the object itself. I have now hit another problem in that Blender only allows small object names - about 22 chars or so. This is really hurting me since I would like to name objects like this:

fixture_dynamic_circle_leftbumper

This is too long and Blender truncates it - chopping off info that I need for the export. Can anyone tell me of a better way to get object metadata out of Blender via the Collada export mechanism ? I'm feeling pretty stuck.
