How do I turn off Extrude?

Whenever I translate and an object in Edit Mode it extrudes rather than just moving. Is there a setting that I need to turn on or off?

You need to make sure you have selected all vertices (use the 'A' key to select all). This will ensure that you have selected all vertices, even if they are hidden. But why not just translate in object mode?

I am new to Blender. The above url is a tutorial I was working in when I started having problems. After I select the UV Sphere and tried to move it it would extrude. I went back to the tutorial and I believe I have found my problem. Thanks for the advice.
