Vertex Weight by image map?

Hi Guys,

I need some help, Is it possible to create vertex weights for a mesh by an image map. For example i have a plane which ive built my terrain on, Ive created custom displace map,Color,rock/grass mask map etc etc. Can i use the black and white Mask map (which masks between grass areas and rocks areas) to create vertex weight for example black equals o weight and white equals full weight, This will then allow me to use a particle system on my terrain where trees will only be created on the grassy areas and never on rock faces and save me having to paint the weights by hand on a 8 Million tris 20kmx20km terrain surface. If not possible yet could someone look into implementing creating vertex weights by image as it will save massive hastles. Many thanks
