Why is sculpting so slow in blender?

The interface, modeling, 3d editing tools, import/export, feature requests, etc

Why is sculpting so slow in blender?

Post by AFDozerman » Wed Sep 25, 2013 4:31 am

I've been trying to get into sculpting with blender recently, and even on low poly models, it's incredibly slow. I have an 8150 at 3.9 GHz and an HD7770, so for awhile, I didn't think that it was an issue with my specs. Recently, though, I checked out my task manager while sculpting and noticed minimal CPU activity, so I'm assuming that all of sculpting is single threaded. If this is the case, how long until we get multithreading support for sculpting in blendee (or even GPU acceleration), and in the meantime, what can I do to improve performance?

Basically rendering speed depends on your CPU and modeling speed depends on how fast your graphics card/driver does OpenGL.

I suspect OpenGL performance is the problem here. A couple things to try are making sure your video driver is up to date (from the manufacturer's website), and playing with the Window Draw Mode in User Preferences.
