Assign UV map to object with mismatched vertex count

You can assign UV maps between objects that have the same vertex count but you can't on objects with different ones.... that I know of. I often model my objects in a separate program and import them into blender later. Some times I'll have various versions of the same model which use the same material but have different vertex counts. It would be nice to be able to use the base model to project it's UV's onto a similar model. Is there a tool that already does this and I'm just missing it?
I work as a software programmer and was thinking this might be a good project to get me started with blender development.

Being able to transfer bone weights and UVs from one object to another would be tremendously useful for LOD model creation. This was being worked on as a GSOC project, but has formally failed the midterm evaluation. It is unknown whether the student will complete the project.

The GSoC project log:

There's a python script that can do something like that, not sure if it's for your case however:

Thanks for the info! It got me thinking since I was only focused on UV maps at the time I didn't take into account that the vertex weights would need this too. The developer of the script seemed to abandon the project once the GSoC was in development - UV's was done.... but never fully completed. Since this would have to work on heavy meshes, I would want to use the C version, so I'll checkout his code (once I find it) and give it a look over. Most likely, I'll just see if I can finish what he started since he was already 70% complete.
