Perspective is toggled with the Num-5 key.

Did you mean 'zoom'? Are you on a Mac?

Some details would be helpful...

Ok, when you say "I've got a mouse especially for this.." are you talking about a 3dmouse of some kind? A little detail goes a long way, otherwise we end up playing 20 questions with hours of delay between turns....

The word "perspective" in English has a couple of different meanings, and I suspect that you are using the word to mean something different than the Blender developers did when the decided to use the term. So let's go back to the beginning.

Let's assume you have the default scene. When you move the mousewheel, what change do you expect to see exhibited buy the default cube in the viewport?

Sorry for all of the confusion, I just don't know how to phrase my question properly. The problem is that I can't view or turn items to see them in different angles.

Middle click to rotate the viewport, shift-middle-click to pan up/dow/left/right, wheel to zoom?
