Interesting new plugin for Maya

Found this at Highend.3d and I thought it sounded like a useful tool. How about it, Blender gurus?:) Could it be done for Blender?

from the site:

"Poly Reduce Planar is a simple poly reduction tool.
The reduction is performed by deleting edges between co-planar faces.
This is particularly useful if you are a TD and you keep receiving poor / dense geometry from your outsourced modelers ; )"

Blender doesn't use n-gons, so the problem is much harder than it seems. There's already a function to join triangles though.

If I may inquire so, is n-gon support planned for future versions of Blender? I know many people religiously stick to quads and tris, but sometimes they do come in handy:/

Don't think this is nothing new, but it would be perfect for rendering detail and complex sceans, look here http://herakles.zcu.cz/research/reduction/examples.php
