bump mapping

I have both the blender 2.0 and 2.3 guides, and have been reading and experimenting, but I can't figure out bump mapping for the life of me.

Does blender actually have mesh displacement, or does it merely show up like a regular shaded texture? None of the methods from the book work, nor has any tweaking of the parameters. Am I missing something?

Using Blender 2.33 by the way.

Blender has got bump mapping - you can find it in the material buttons. Add a texture to the material then you can find a button 'nor' under the 'map to' tab. It doesn't displace the mesh because it is bump mapping, not displacement mapping. Blender doesn't have any displacement mapping. At least not directly. There is a workaround with the noise tool in the edit buttons.

EDIT: Figured it out, thanks.

Hrm. I have a texturing book along side for reference, and in the bump mapping examples, the bump map gives it actual depth once rendered. In blender, as the guides specified and per your mentioning, I've tried the NOR buttons and their adjustments, but nothing special occurs; it's just like applying a regular flat texture over the mesh.

belender does also support displacement mapping. Just click the "disp" button instead of "nor". It is a little trickier to get the hang of though.

the displacement works well if you have it setsmooth and have a very highpoly model, as it moves molys, not makes new ones.

So displacement mapping in blender is only viewable when you render the object? Is anyone planning on making real displacement modeling, so that, for instance, I can use a displacement map to make a flat plane into a mountain/terrain object, for it to become the actual mesh?

i am sure someone is thinking about it, and that may be coming soon, but we should get paint on displacements first.

hi guys, look for a python script, this is already done. but hard coder could be better of course.

Also, when applying a bump map, the texture is all screwed up with the camera angle not pointed directly at it.

For example, rendering a flat plane with a bump map results in a worthless render because the texture is "stretched" unless the view is straight at the plane; just try it with the default scene but replace the cube with a plane. It's driving me nuts, nothing seems to map the texture to the model reasonably. Am I missing something here?

If you have the 2.3 manual, look at page 118. Otherwise, search the online documentation for "noise"
