how about using tab itself as the modification key? that is:

- press and release tab opens edit mode (current way)
- hold tab and hit 1, 2 or 3 takes you to vertex, edge, face
- press and release tab again takes you out of edit mode (also current way)
But then you still have the problem if you want to change edit-level several times while in edit-mode. Tricky, otherwise I liked the idea. Anyway, I don't think it matters what any of us thinks, if Ton thinks otherwise;) But, like I said, I've kind of gotten used to the way it's done now, and I'm just going to hope for customizability regarding hotkeys.

why? it's easier then ctrl+tab. and it doesn't use a menu. you can switch any time to any level by pressing tab and 1, 2 or 3. you just shouldn't release tab BEFORE you press a number, or this will take you out of edit mode.

i find it perfect :)
