I gotta agree that this is a top priority (along with unwrap tools and animation tools). Normal editing and hard edges. This will also mean smooth preview in edit mode. I dream of that day.

Bumping again years later because 2.5 is being worked on and IMO this problem has persisted long enough.

Well, some years have passed again, so let me also express my interest in being able to manually rotate vertex normals.
