Feature request: Hiding particles/duplis in the 3d view

Post by Friday13 » Thu Dec 30, 2004 8:17 pm

How about an option (a button) for hiding particles from the 3D View, and also one for hiding dupliverts? It might be nice to have them hidden in the 3D view (while unhidden when rendering).

It woud be like having subdivision enabled only when rendering.

(And yes, I know you can move the particle emitter or the dupliverted object to another layer, but this would prevent the 3D view from slowing down with several thousands of particles and/or dupliverts).

Okay, people will probably say "but you can just do this or that"...

intrr had something that could do that in his layer manager code (he lost it in a HD crash, not sure what the status is). You could set layers to always render (whether it was visible in the 3D view or not). Useful for lights of course, but for dupliverts and scene props too.

Yes, that is what layers are for, but yes they are not good enough.

grandpa talks: I used to keep a list of layers that needed to be on in the backbuf button (no text editor in the old days). it would look like #1-5,8,10.
Hahaha. Fix it, fix it!

I think this is a very good idea.
For particles I would like to see what you suggest what happens with subdiv.
show 10% (slider!) of the particles, render 100%.
Maybe even all edges, all everything.

To make things easy for the user, it could also be: show 10% (slider!) of what is in this layer. render 100. This would be more hard for developers.
A layer remake would be needed.

This would be useful.

Additionally, it would be neat if static particle drawing in the 3d view was optimized by: only drawing the row closest to the camera, the ones that are visible/stick out on the side. I only really nead to see where the particles will extend to.

Showing a percentage of the particles is a great idea! And setting the slider to 0% would hide them from view.

But for dupliverts it would have to be a hide button (showing a percentage doesn't seem useful in this case), especially if the dupliverted object is very complex, so the user can prevent slowdowns before enabling them.
