I compared Blenders Mapping features with some of 3dsMax and think these features would make mapping and texturing much better:
- using subsurf it would be great if UV/Image Editor showing the Subsurf
mesh and not the original. So you must not convert SubSurf to
mesh to be able to map this.
- it would be great if it was possible changing the texture space and
position for simple orco mapping in depending of global X,Y,Z of
the object instead of depending on the plane of the image (xy,
xz, yz)

I think this would make mapping much easier and simple mapping much more usefull and effectiv.

Ideally, maybe this should be implemented as in Zbrush where you can also acces the underlying subsurf MESH, at the exact level you want to work on your model. So if you want a small detail in the mesh, you'd be able to switch to a certain subsurf level and actually manipulate the geometry. If you want to edit the cage, you should simply be able to go back to the outer level.
It could work similarly for the UV Editor, so you can rough out the mapping on the cage and then move in and adjust details.
