Features request + inspirating tools

Post by dsp_418 »

I'm a Cinema 4D user but in last time I'm getting very interested in Blender 3D.
It seems really great, but I've some questions: perhaps some of them can get an answer maybe some of them could work as a feature request.

1 - Is there a way to show a panel box to know which view is the active view? In perspective window is easy to know about that, but I'm getting confused in the other views: so, sometimes to know what's the view I'm working on I've to click on the View menu at the bottom of the view window. Actually I don't remember that numpad 7 is top, numpad 1 is the front ... In Cinema 4D there's a nice feature known as HUB: those are transparent boxes that user can move around the view window. In these box the user can choose to show a pletora of different infos: the projection view, numbers of vertices selected, number of current frame, active object, and so on. And you can use hubs to changes parameters right there, over the view window, such as light brightness, number of faces and so on.

2 - I think Blender needs more shader options:

Besides that, there are two nice features, FUSION and LAYER.
Fusion shader:

Layer shader (it works just like a layer, think to Photoshop or Gimp):

3 - And last but not least, a Cinema 4D plugins, just for inspiration:

I agree about the layer/fusion shader. I am working on a project right now that would be MUCH easier with a layer shader. At the moment, to achieve a "layered" shader, you have to duplicate the mesh, which doubles the number or polys you have to render. Now, before anyone says "you can layer textures, why do you need a layer shader?" .. translucency? You can't achieve a realistic translucent surface with the existing shaders. Landis (Create thread) and Fligh% replied to my
thread, mailing me a .blend containing a duplicated sphere and multiple materials. This may seems trivial to want a layer shader but I think that if there was one, not only would things like translucence be easier but the blender masters would find new uses for it.
About the view names, it would be ok, but if you know which axes are which view, you can tell by looking at them which is front, top, etc. (Front=X+Z, Side=Y+Z, Top=X+Y).

The active window has a different coloured header bar (depending on which theme you are using). They are made active only on mouse over though, so just look where your cursor is! Or have I misunderstood?

Are you proposing something like a drag and drop toolbar? A floating panel where you can drag commonly used buttons, options, and information (eg: number of verts) would be good.

No, the problem isn't the active window. My need is instead to have something with the projection view info displayed.
If you take a look at this small movie:
http://maxon.net/pages/products/c4d/hig ... lider.html

you'll see in the top left corner a little transparent box that says: PERSPECTIVE

It would be useful have these boxes for each view (Top, for the top view, Left for the left view and so on ...)

To me, that seems like such a waste of space (perhaps just because it is a small resolution video)

There is the small icon at the bottom left which sort of shows this, and the colours of the axis (it only takes a little bit of time to remember blue is z, green is y, red is x)

I can understand wanting to make it as simple as possible - there did used to be an icon on the header that could be used to change top/front/side, but also showed the current mode by its icon. If we get draggable buttons/menu items (maybe one day) we may be able to decide whether we want this button and where it is etc :D
