shadow color

Post by ElBarto » Thu Feb 03, 2005 10:32 am

It is nice to see the development of the internal renderer of Blender goes on and make it faster and better. Now we have a lot of nice features and we have color settings for Specular, Mirror, Diffuse and color of the light.

What i'm really missing is setting the color of the shadows for lights. Mostly shadows more dark blue then black and q quick, fast way to set thsi up is missing.

a shadow is an abscence of light

it doesn't make sense for it to have color

the reason shadows look blue in sunlight is because that is the color of the light shining there [from the sky]

add another lamp, make it not cast shadows and be pretty dim.....

also, you can use negative lamps to fill only the shadow with a color, but it really isn't necescary [there are probably other reasons... I forget them at the moment]

Like z3r0_d said, in real life shadows don't have color. You can change your ambient settings under the world buttons to a dark blue to achieve this.

However, sometimes it can be a pain to work too realistically, especially since ambient light in one area can be different than another area. Sometimes 3D is all about cheating to get the best quality and performance gain. I know Maya has support for colored shadows, and I don't think the code would be too complex. I do think the problem would lie in where in the GUI to make room for it.

In reality, everything is made of atoms too - wireframes are cheats.

Shadows appear coloured in real life because the eye adds a complimentary colour to the rest of the scenery in the shadow area. It's not really a colour, but it looks like it, and that's what matters.

most major 3d apps has support for shadow color (3ds max too). setting the ambient color does not work either (CVS050119).

Real life does not have DOF, that also is a very wanted feature.
Painters use color shadows all the time to add more depth to the image.
And real life benefits from reflected light to color shadows.

I'm all for it, and always paint my shadows in Maya.

I updated my feature proposal about colored shadows but please read "Cleaner interface and better color picker" first to understand the screenshots.

i disagree about the color picker proposal that you have...

it doesnt make sense to me to have a completely separate popup in order to just set the color...

although i do think that this would lead to a more streamlined interface, this could slow some user down

Anyway, what about the shadow color? Will someone try to add this feature in the next release? In my opinion it is something really necesary
