Request: transparency in viewport.

I think it would be a good idea to allow transparency in the viewport as an option for the material. This would help people creat things from reference images so they can see the background while modeling, and be able to tell how the faces ar oriented because of shading(can't happen in wireframe)

i may be interpreting what you guys are wanting incorrectly...

but try to turn OFF the little icon with the shaded box in the 3d view header in edit mode
(its only visible when you're in shaded mode)

its next to the selection mode buttons

you may be pleasantly surprised

And also enable draw faces on the right of the edit button windows.

Speaking for myself

I would like a new viewport shading option that renders everying in that viewport with a level of transparency. Without having to fiddle with individual object parameters.

cheers

I'm asking for something to let me see through the model to a reference pic behind it. I am aware of the z-buffer select :P

Also, I would be all for adding an opacity option option to "draw faces". That is currently what I use, but I would like it to be a bit more opaque :D
