Collaborative network modeling

Post by KDR_11k »

Some artists found that they'd like an application that allows multiple people to work on one scene in realtime over the network. Means both see the same scene and what one user changes both (or all, if multiple users are supported) see immediately in their app.

A comparable system is Opencanvas but it's a drawing program. Blender would probably be the first modeling program to implement multiple users working on one scene over the network if it was implemented.

The question is of course whether Blender's current system could support more than one user working on the scene, I suppose multiple users editing one object wouldn't work.

Basically what would be needed is a way to sync the scene in two or more Blender instances in realtime (not the view position, of course). Of course not only the end result would be needed, most would probably prefer if they could see what the other guy is currently moving even before he completes it but that's optional and could be dropped if too hard to implement.

Another question is what would be sent over the network, scene parts that resemble the undo steps or just transformations with the occassional full scene sync if a problem occurred somewhere.

I guess the difficulty of implementing that would come from how the current system is implemented.

also, verse intergration is one of the google summer of code projects, so it should be in and working soon.

and not only will verse let people in blender work over a network, verse will also allow people in diferent programs to colaberate, like maya and blender editing the same scene.

Ah, cool!

How will it solve the different ways of working, e.g. smoothing groups vs. hard/soft edge or MAX biped vs. bones?

At the moment, verse will only be integrated in blender. I doubt that it will ever be integrated into 3ds MAX or other commercial programs.

no you are far off..... currently camilla is writing the maya plugin for verse, and afaik the goal is to get verse in as many programs as possible, and not just limited to 3d programs, there are people part of the uni-verse project who will be writing audio applications using verse.... if you have any questions bout verse come by the verse chat room, #verse on freenode, or join the mailing list http://projects.blender.org/mailman/listinfo/verse-dev

Blender to Maya
jiri and elmindreda managed to get geometry from Blender to Maya today (2005/07/12, -318527.96). It went very smoothly.

The machines were running different operating systems, on different architectures, in different countries. Yay for Verse.

Will there be some sort of voice over Internet protocol included with this, because that would come in handy.

yes, verse can handel audio data types. you would just have to code a module that would send and receive it
